Switching from Shieldy to Varta in 10 Minutes (Or Run Both for Defense in Depth)

May 7, 20266 minBy Daryna Fornalska

Shieldy is a focused, well-maintained tool that does one thing: stop bots from joining your Telegram group by forcing new members to solve a captcha. For most of the 2018-2022 era, that was enough — most spam came from hastily-created throwaway accounts that couldn't pass a captcha because there was no human on the other end.

That spam economy is gone. Today's spam accounts are mostly aged accounts purchased from resellers, often with real history and verified humans briefly available to tap a button. Half of modern raids use real accounts under remote control by paid agents who tap captchas on dozens of groups per day. The captcha catches none of this — it gates entry, but the actual attack happens after entry.

This is exactly the gap Varta is built to close. The good news: you don't have to choose. Shieldy and Varta cover different attack surfaces and run cleanly in parallel.

Shieldy and Varta cover different attack surfaces

The job split:

  • Shieldy's domain: the door. New member arrives → captcha → either solves it (in) or doesn't (rejected). One check at entry. Free, lightweight, easy to maintain.
  • Varta's domain: every message after entry. AI-classified content moderation, regardless of how the sender got past the gate. Handles aged-account funnels, slow-burn DM scams, image-embedded URLs, multi-language coordinated patterns.

The overlap is approximately zero. Shieldy doesn't read message content; Varta doesn't gate entry. Two different problems, two different tools — they coexist cleanly because Varta never posts in your group.

The 10-day side-by-side migration

Run both bots in parallel, verify Varta's catches, then promote when the verdicts match your judgment.

  1. Min 0–2Step 1 of 5

Add Varta in shadow mode (don't touch Shieldy)

Add @Varta_moderator_bot to your group. Shadow mode is the default — Varta watches every message, DMs you what it would have caught, but doesn't act. Shieldy keeps running normally as the active layer.

→ Both bots present; only Shieldy moderates.
  2. Min 2–4Step 2 of 5

Verify the first hour of catches

Open Varta's admin DM. You'll see what it would have caught in the last few minutes. Compare to what Shieldy actually did. Look for: catches Shieldy missed, false positives, borderline calls.

→ First evidence: do verdicts match your judgment?
  3. Day 2–7Step 3 of 5

    Run side-by-side for one week

Daily check the Varta admin DM digest. Reply to corrections in plain language: "that wasn't spam, she's a regular." The bot updates its understanding of your group specifically. After 7 days you have real comparative data.

→ Bot learns your group; you accumulate decision data.
  4. Day 7–10Step 4 of 5

    Promote Varta, reduce Shieldy

Switch Varta to delete-only mode. Then to cautious. Reduce Shieldy's active rules incrementally — keep what it does well (analytics for Combot, federations for Rose, captcha for Shieldy, welcome flow for GroupHelp), retire the moderation rules.

→ Layer separation: keep Shieldy for its strengths, Varta for AI moderation.
  5. Day 10+Step 5 of 5

    Steady state — autonomous Varta

Varta runs autonomous mode. Shieldy runs alongside for the parts it does well. You check the daily summary in DM, occasionally tap Undo when you disagree, otherwise do nothing. Migration complete.

→ Admin time on moderation drops by ~80%.

What to keep from Shieldy (or not)

The decision depends on what your spam shape actually looks like:

  • Keep Shieldy if you regularly see scripted bot waves at the gate — like during launch announcements, viral posts, or community visibility spikes. Shieldy's captcha cleanly stops the cheap end of the spam funnel at zero LLM cost.
  • Disable Shieldy if the dominant spam shape is post-entry: DM funnels, slow-burn scams from aged accounts, impersonation. The captcha friction at entry costs you legitimate members without stopping the actual problem.
  • Keep both for now and decide later. Shieldy is free, so the cost of running it for the first month while Varta accumulates data is zero. After 30 days, look at Varta's catches: if many of them came from accounts that successfully passed Shieldy's gate, Shieldy isn't doing meaningful work anymore.

Most admins running both report a measurable drop in DM-funnel reports from members within 2-3 weeks of adding Varta — the post-entry layer Shieldy structurally couldn't provide.

What you'll notice in the first 30 days

Concrete behavioral changes admins typically report after migrating from Shieldy-only to Shieldy + Varta:

  • Aged-account scams stop landing. Accounts that passed Shieldy's captcha but had bad intent get caught by Varta on their first scam message — usually within minutes of posting it.
  • DM-funnel reports drop. Members stop arriving in your DMs saying "this person from the group messaged me about a job opportunity, is this real?" Varta flags the in-group precursors before the DM funnel kicks in.
  • Image-based scams stop slipping through. QR codes embedded in images, screenshot-of-an-offer scams — invisible to a captcha, parsed by Varta's vision layer.
  • Cross-group offenders get caught faster. If you run multiple groups, the same aged account hitting multiple communities in sequence gets flagged in group B based on a flag from group A — Shieldy can't share signals across groups; Varta's cross-group reputation layer does this automatically.
  • The Shieldy gate stays useful (or doesn't, your call). If you keep it, no maintenance change. If you decide to remove it, Varta's coverage is comprehensive enough on its own for most spam shapes.

Honest tradeoffs

Two things to flag honestly:

Shieldy's captcha creates friction for legitimate members. Mobile users, accessibility cases, fast-moving conversations — captcha drop-off is real. If retention of new legitimate members matters more than the marginal spam Shieldy's gate stops, the math may favor disabling Shieldy entirely once Varta is autonomous.

Varta isn't permanently free. The free tier is full AI but the 5-day trial timer activates the moment Varta catches first spam in a given group. After the trial, plans start at $5/month Hobby. Pricing breakdown. For comparison: Shieldy is permanently free; Varta isn't, but Varta does dramatically more work.

Ready to start?

Three minutes from this paragraph to "Varta is in shadow mode":

  1. Open @Varta_moderator_bot and add it to your group.
  2. Grant admin permissions: delete messages, restrict members, ban users.
  3. Done. Varta starts in shadow mode. Shieldy stays as your entry gate.

To test Varta's reasoning before installing: paste a real spam message that slipped past Shieldy into the live classifier demo. Same AI engine running across 46 communities. 3-second verdict with plain-language reasoning.

Migration sequence above is the actual pattern admins of 46 Varta-protected communities followed when adding Varta alongside Shieldy. Add Varta in shadow mode →
