Bio plausible? Speaking the right language? Captcha tap? Recent activity? Account old enough? Six green checks — you let them in.
Between 2022 and 2026, AI matched five of those signals at scale. The sixth — account age — got priced out by the secondary market.

- Account age: account is 6+ months old.

Avatar matching — broken since ~2022
Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, and a long tail of "thispersondoesnotexist" generators produce passable human faces in seconds. By 2024, AI-generated profile pics were indistinguishable from real photos to humans. Spammer toolkits embed the generator — the bot account gets a unique face per registration. The signal that survives: reverse-image search. If the avatar appears on multiple unrelated accounts, that's a downstream signal. But it requires post-entry detection, not pre-entry gate-checking.
Bio plausibility — broken since ~2023
ChatGPT-style models generate coherent bios in any genre. "Software engineer at Acme. Skiing, photography, dogs." takes 2 seconds to produce. The signal "this bio reads like a real person wrote it" stopped being a signal — every bio reads like that. The signal that survives: bio specificity that ties to verifiable external claims. Hard to scale even for legitimate users.
Language nativeness — broken since ~2023
GPT-4 and Claude write native-quality Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish — every major language Telegram operates in. The bot account passes the "linguistic native" sniff test in any language at zero marginal cost. If your moderation strategy was "if a message looks like translated English, suspect bot" — that strategy stopped working in 2023.
Captcha taps — broken since ~2024
Two paths to break captchas: (1) buy a CAPTCHA-solver-as-a-service for fractions of a cent per solve, (2) hire click-farm workers to physically tap captchas across dozens of groups per day. Both are deployed in production. Aged human-operated accounts running through click-farms tap any captcha in real time. Click-farms operating aged accounts post 3-5 messages per day per account across multiple groups — just enough to look "active" without being suspicious. By the time the account joins your community, it has a 30-day activity history any moderator would call "looks like a real user."
Account age — broken since ~2022
Aged Telegram accounts trade on secondary markets. As of 2026, $1-$3 buys an account with: 6+ months of history, phone verification, profile photo, bio, occasional legitimate-looking activity. For $10-$30 you get an account with 2+ years and verified payment-method history. The signal "this account is at least 6 months old" still holds — but now means "the operator paid a few dollars to skip your age check." That's not the same as "this person has been on Telegram organically for a year."
What signals still work in 2026
After AI matched the cheap signals, three categories of signal remain useful — and they're all post-entry, not gate-checks:
Cross-community reputation
If an account has been banned for spam in 5 of the 46 communities Varta protects, the 6th community's first encounter with that account starts with a strong negative signal. Cross-group reputation compounds with network size — the more communities share the signal layer, the faster a new spammer is identified. Semantic understanding of message content
A bot account can fake every profile signal — but it has to send a message eventually. The message has signal: paraphrased scam patterns, social-engineering phrasing, false-urgency hooks, fake-admin announcements. A language model reading the message catches the pattern across thousands of phrasings. This is the surface where bots can't disguise — yet. Image content reading
The fastest-growing category of bot spam in 2024-2026 is image-only: a screenshot with a fraudulent URL rendered as pixels. Bot account joins, sends one image, leaves. The shift: from gate-checks to per-message verdicts
The practical implication: stop relying on profile-level signals at entry. Move the verification layer to per-message decisions.
Concretely:
- A captcha at entry is fine if it's free and frictionless. It still stops the cheapest throwaway bots. Don't expect it to do more than that.
- Profile-level signals (avatar, bio, language) are unreliable evidence in 2026. A "good-looking profile" should mean nothing — one way or the other.
- Per-message AI moderation reading every message for content + cross-checking sender reputation across the network is the layer doing the actual work.
This is what progressive trust operationalizes in production: the bot watches every message, escalates to the admin in DM on borderline cases, and acts silently on clear ones. Profile-level signals are inputs, not gates.
The bigger picture
The cheap signals that stopped working aren't a bug to fix — they're a category-shift to recognize. For two years I've been building what I called "an anti-spam bot." After watching the signals shift, I think a better name is: a trust layer for Telegram communities — infrastructure that decides, message by message, who belongs.

Are captchas worthless now?
Not worthless — but limited if you treat them as the only entry filter. Captchas still stop the cheap throwaway bots that haven't been priced out of the market yet. Run a captcha if it's free and adds no friction. Don't expect it to catch the aged-account bot economy that walks through any captcha.
How do I know if my current anti-spam tool is using broken signals?
Look at what triggers a ban. If the rules cite avatar mismatch, bio template, IP location, captcha failure, or "account age below 6 months" — those are gate-checks reliant on the cheap signals AI matched. They still catch some bots. They miss the harder ones (the ones that look like real users on every profile-level field).
Is account age completely useless?
Almost. It's still a weak signal — a 7-day-old account is more suspicious than a 7-year-old one. But the 6-month threshold most rules use is now within the secondary-market price point. A serious spammer pays $1-$3 to clear it. The signal hasn't disappeared, but its meaning has shifted from "this account exists organically" to "someone paid to skip your age check."
What about legitimate new members — do they still get through?
Yes. The category of bot that matters now (aged + human-operated) is expensive enough that spammers don't deploy it casually. A genuine new member with a clean account, a real avatar, and an actual reason to join goes through unimpeded. The signal cost rose for spammers — but it didn't rise for legitimate users.
